Society and Economy in Egypt and the Eastern Mediterranean 1600-1900: Essays in Honor of Andre Raymond In his long academic career, historian Andr? Raymond has been one of the foremost scholars of urban history in the Arab world, and in particular of Cairo during the Ottoman period. His work was instrumental in changing orientalist views on the decline and stagnation of this region prior to the modern period, and has inspired researchers across the academic spectrum. This diverse collection of studies by leading scholars in Egypt, the United States, and Europe offers a wide selection of recent research in Ottoman-era Egypt and the Middle East, and serves as a fitting tribute to Raymond's own work. A main theme of this volume is the urban society and economy in Egypt and the eastern Mediteranean of the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries, suggesting new ways through which the history of this period can be understood.
Egypt Egypt is located in northern Africa, borders the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea, and includes the Asian Sinai Peinsula. The annual Nile River flood brings great richness to this semi-isolated region, with deserts to the east and west, and allowed for the development of this great civilization. Current problems for the country include a rapidly growing population, limited arable land, and dependence on the Nile, all conditions that drain Egypt's natural resources. Egypt provides a fascinating and current look at this powerful North African country. Engaging chapters cover an introduction to Egypt: its landscape, climate, and water; Egypt's population; the agriculture; urban Egypt; economy and trade; tourism; and social, economic, and environmental issues. Full-color photographs and illustrations accompany maps and graphs, providing a visually stimulating study of the country. Additional resources include a glossary, lists of further information, and a comprehensive index.
